Cocktail, Shmocktail

Steve has a holiday work party on Saturday. The invitation said it was a Holiday Ball. I thought it was pretty formal so I went and got this dress. I got an email today saying that most people wear "cocktail dresses"--whatever that means. Is this too formal? I know it looks like a ball gown, but the waist is at the bottom of my ribs and the hem is 2-3 inches below the knee. What do you guys think?

If this doesn't work, I can take the dress back and find something else. Do you think jeans and a t-shirt would be too informal?

Well, having been to only one "cocktail" party in my life, I won't be much help. The one I went to was pretty formal, and your dress would have fit in. (Though my impression is that most have more form-fitting skirts.) I think most cocktail dresses are the "little black dresses."

FWIW, I **L-O-V-E** your dress!! It's gorgeous! I say keep it and find an excuse to wear it somewhere, sometime (anniversary?!) even if it doesn't work for Steve's work party! (I think it will... but don't quote me on that!)

I say wear it! You found a great dress that seems like it will look good on you (hard to tell from a pic of the dress alone, you know), and you will be done with that particular worry. Enjoy your dress, relax, and try to enjoy the party as much as you can when feeling out of place with all the people who will be getting drunk! :]

BTW, I am recruiting you to go shopping with Sarah in a year when she wants a homecoming or prom dress! You found a modest beauty!

Never been to a cocktail party. I have only seen them on tv. The dress looks good. I agree with mama d. sorry I can't offer any other help. I love the dress.

Beautiful! I'm jealous...I want a party to go to that I can get all fancied (?sp) up for. Wear it to play group and then we'll know for sure if it's fit for the event;)

I thought a Cocktail dress was a formal-type, but shorter than a floor length. So, from the little and no knowledge I have, you dress fits the description. Have a great time!!!

I think it is a great dress that will work perfect for the event. I hope you guys have fun and you'll have to take pictures with you in it and all done up.

I love that you posted a picture of your dress lying on the floor. You know it would have been easier to help out if it was on you! Alas, who would have taken the picture. . . I'm sure your hubby wasn't around and Alison's picture taking skills wouldn't have captured the gleam in your eye. I guess the floor shot will have to do. When the real event takes place take some pictures of you dolled up. The dress is PERFECT. It's just what I would have picked for the event myself. . . plus if Lindsey pucks on you, the stain will blend right in! HA HA! Really, I love it! Have fun sis!

Your dad and I give it a yes vote!!! Wish we could be there to tend the kids while you party!

Jamie,

It's really pretty! Where did you get it? I have the hardest time finding formal modest dresses here! I think the dress will be right for the occasion because it seems to me that people in Jesse's medical school wore stuff like that at the formal dance we went to last year. We're looking forward to a night of adventure with Allie and Lindsay Lou! Remember to take lotsa pictures.

I think the dress will be perfect. I am with Shayleen I wish I had somewhere to go to get all fancied up for. I am sure others will be just as dressy, because us girls just like to get pretty when we have an excuse, and when we find time to shower, it's even more of a plus if the kids aren't busting in the bathroom while we are showering.

I think it is perfect!!! I am sure there will some dressed fancier and others not as fancy. I wouldn't worry about it. It's like going to opera. Some woman wear nice pants and others are in there niciest dresses. You will look beautiful.

Very cute Jamie! It will definately work. And from the sounds of everyone else's comments, maybe we should all go out and get fancy dresses and go to dinner together or something!

I think we need a "dress up and get out of mommy mode" event! Does someone want to host it, or do we go out somewhere?! (With or without spouses, for those to whom that applies.) I'm willing to volunteer my older kids as babysitters. (They'd do it for free; though of course they'd rather do it for money. Typical teens...)

Notice how everyone has said the same basic thing I did... in a fraction of the space and word count! Boy, I really am wordy! :]

I love it! I think it's perfect! I wouldn't change a thing about the dress or the woman that it was purchased for!! It sounds like you have babysitting arranged with Rachel and Jesse, but if you need us, let me know.

Where did you get it?? I would like to get something like that for James graduation, maybe.

It's so beautiful! I agree with the others, there will be a variety from dresses to pantsuits on others. So... Go. Have a ball. Bring back pics for blog! We're all anxious to hear about the big day.

The only thing that could make that dress any prettier would be seeing you in it! I'll bet Steve is looking forward to seeing you in it!
